Hear From Some of Our Nurses

  • The culture of Akron Children's is awesome. I work with some of the most compassionate, enthusiastic, intelligent people I've ever met. We work well as a team together, which I think sets us up for success. We approach all the challenges we face as a team, so I never really feel alone which I think is very important in a stressful job situation. And I have team members to fall back on when I need to.

I started as a nurse tech here in 2012. As I graduated nursing school, I got to move up to the staff nurse position, and now I am blessed with educational assistance, and I'm enrolled full time at Ohio State to be a neonatal nurse practitioner. And I've been continuing on at Akron Children's. The educational assistance really lightens that burden of tuition, which takes a whole of stress off as a full time master’s student.

Children's is progressing and continuing to grow, even in my short 3 years here. The growth I have seen is incredible. I can't wait to watch the continual progression of the hospital, and I'm honored to be a part of it.

  • The people I work with are my work family. I see them sometimes more than my real family, so we all work pretty well together. Nobody leaves you stranded. It's my little home away from home.

We're very passionate in what we do and passionate about children. And it really shows in everybody.

Working at Akron Children's is very rewarding. They are very caring, not only toward their patients but their employees. We have good health insurance, and the tuition reimbursement here is amazing. It's a great opportunity that the hospital gives their staff in order to further their career if they want to. Not a lot of places do that.

  • Children's has really pushed me to become a better nurse. They've pushed me to reach for higher goals as far as my education. It's never been you have to do this or you need to do this. It's let me help you do this. So, I appreciate that.

The nurses I work with are all very goal oriented, but we like to have fun with our patients. We like to have a comfortable atmosphere. It's not normal being in the hospital, so we try to make our patients feel as at ease as possible while they're here. It helps not only to make our day better when our patients are at ease, but I feel it keeps our patients focused on really healing and getting home.

  • As a new nurse, I've never felt isolated in my role. The transition from being in orientation to being on my own, you could barely feel that transition. It was almost imperceptible. I was so supported by the other nurses that I was working with. And even now a year in, I'm not afraid to ask questions. We all have the same goal, the health of these children, so that really comes through.

I have a great day at work almost every day that I work, because it just comes down to those small moments. The children are all just so precious. And there are so many little moments where they just give you a smile or show you that they appreciate the help that you're giving. It's such a great opportunity to have a tangible role in their healing, even if it's administering a breathing treatment that's going to help their little lungs fill up easier or giving an antibiotic that's going to help them fight off a bad infection. It's an amazing opportunity and it always provides a very great day at work, being a part of that.

Children’s really cares about the people who are going to be on the front lines providing the care for their patients, because they do value the quality of that care. They want to find people who are going to blossom in their roles, who are going to take advantage of the opportunities they have for staff development and future opportunities at Akron Children's.
